At this point there are 10 videos available on youtube. They are fairly comprehensive, but I feel as though there will have to be a few followup vids to help convey some of the more abstract concepts... I've been really struggling to get some of the ideas into useful words, and at wildfire we only brushed the surface, but I feel like these vids get a little closer to the big picture I'm going for.

So the more I go past the next level of what I have seen done with tangle work the more I realize that the names and terms are complete and utter rubbish...

The link between timing and plane changing makes all tangles no different than another. (ex. any atomic tangle becomes chase or butterfly with a timing change) The terms hyperloop, butterfloop, airwrap all go away with multiple knot work or plane shifts.

How would people feel about a change to a more comprehensive, knot count / drive style / what plane / exit point, type system? I think it would be easier to explain things...

Like trying to explain what I'm getting into now:

Old way: I guess it would be described as a five beat, airwrap, wall plane, anti-spin, flower, with 5 beat airwrap exit inside or in front waist-wrap.....

Or: 5X outside, wall plane, 4 point anti-pattern, exit 5X inside or behind....

Which makes more sense to folks?
Don't know if I'm making any sense to folks but the further I go down the tangle hole the more frustrated I'm getting trying to explain things with the old terms....thoughts???

I stumbled upon this concept when I was playing in a very deep trance, focusing on breaking apart the circle in every way possible. Cough, cough... No I'm not tripping, I'm just speaking gibbrish. Anyhow, enough with the fun stuff, here's the tech talk:

-Hybrid stall switch-
As you know a stall switch can exist either horizontally or vertically. They share a common factor with pendulums in that they occupy the space of a half circle. Additionally a stall switch as any other fragment of a circle has a driving style, you can isolate them, circle around your hand, cat-eye them etc, even if it's just for half a circle.

The other day I stumbled upon a hybrid. I will try to get a video of it asap. The basic idea is when one hand stall switches by moving around the poi head, the other makes an ordinary circle, creating either a fragment of a classical hybrid or a fragment of opposite hybrid. In my case an opposite hybrid.

I start out with a burning hand which is a toss where you catch the poi head, not the handle. This easily flows into a gravity check, quickly followed by a ground stall. A variation on this involves flowing from a gravity check into an ouch, my face!.

Hey, all-

To piggy-back a little on Noel's vid of G, I've been working on trying to incorporate more plane-bending into some of the techier moves I'm familiar with and have been focusing recently on CAPs. In the past few weeks I've been trying to figure out the basic parameters of plane bending in and out of them and made up a video last night that covers what I've been doing--I'd love some feedback.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4KrFS9EQww

All the transitions I'm working with here are assuming bending from CAP to CAP oriented 90 degrees off of each other with a preference towards vertically oriented CAPs rather than horizontal. Noel's G video shows some of the potential for mixing up the horizontal and vertical CAPs near the end. Right now, the middle transits seem to show the most potential for really varying the scope and type of motion that a body is bending into, so I'd love to know if anyone else is playing with these and if so what I'm missing in this breakdown.

Thanks in advance and enjoy!

what i'm talking about is.
this.

so i'm in reverst butter fly antispin flower. i art a stall that meets right above my head. forcing the poi to go back in the opposite direction. instread of spinning them in like a circle i whip them under my arms horizontally (so i'm going from wall plane then atomicing) and stalling horizontally behind my back. which makes a triangle like shape.

then the trick is after that stall to corkscrew up so now the poi is above my arm then stall to a point down below my feets. yeah. i have some photos of clean (attempts) at this on my facebook i'll throw one up on my profile here on tribe.... it's just one triangle and a part of doing the corkscrew that allows me to do the 2nd triangle pattern cuz the shutter speed or exposure was set faster than it takes me to do this move (great for getting flowers but more time needed for this pattern...)

Alien Jon Workshops HERE in Seattle!!! Please help spread the word about this fantastic workshop that Luxotica is helping to host…

This will be his first time visiting Seattle and don’t miss it! We will be offering 3 workshops over the weekend. Attend 1, 2 or all 3…we guarantee you will learn something new in every session.
<br>
RSVP’s are required as there is limited space. Please email: erin@luxotica.com.
<br>
***********************************************<br>
1st Workshop: "Learning to spin from your Body" <br>
There is a tendency amongst both beginners and advanced spinners, playing at the edge of their technical ability, to plant their feet, lock up their body, and put all of their focus on what their hands are doing with the poi. This workshop gives you the foundational elements, forms, and understanding you need to increase your freedom of movement. You'll develop the tools you need to easily take that move you're learning and move your body freely with it. <br>
1st phase of class: Miming poi <br>
•	Footwork basics
•	Footwork Drills (expect to be a little silly)
•	The Hallway and keeping your bearings
•	Timing and direction with your arms: the 4 modes
•	Move your feet and your arms at the same time!
•	Focus points and transition points for the 4 modes wile turning!! <br>
2nd phase: getting poi involved <br>
•	4 modes with poi
•	Footwork drills with poi!
•	pinpoint your problem areas and polish them
•	Where can we push it: Pirouettes and other silliness!
<br>
******************************************************************<br>
2nd Workshop: "Spinning Geometry with 1 and 2 poi: Time Sculpture" <br>
In this workshop we'll take a look at the fundamental geometric attributes of poi when spinning , as they relate to you and the space around you. We'll explore how to move circles around your body, touching on basic building blocks that even advanced spinners have missed. Then we will explore the relationship and symmetries of 2 circles. Finally we will move beyond the circle into expansive and contractive orbits, and the patterns you can make with them.
<br>
1st phase will be: The Geometry of a circle from 2D to 2.5D <br>
•	Anatomy of a circle <br>
•	Figure-eights and Cross-Points <br>
•	Pushing and pulling the circle <br>
•	Move through zones around your body <br>
2nd phase: how the poi dance together <br>
•	Symmetry and Harmonic Proportion
•	Stalls
•	Loops and Arcs
•	Linear moves
•	Continuous Assembly Patterns (CAPs)
<br>
*****************************************<br>
3rd Workshop: Tech poi and group requests
In this workshop, we will delve deeper into the space surrounding your body, the frames and negative space your limbs and body can create, and how your poi interact with it. This is an an elegant and more easily understood take on some rather technical poi spinning. Then we will open up the class to participant directed questions and request for technical and advanced moves and patterns.
<br>
1st Phase: Advanced use of Body Space
•	Framing your poi
•	Insides
•	Inswings
•	Introversions
•	Inversions
2nd Phase: Group questions and exploration
The group can explore more advanced moves they want to learn!
<br>
<br>
Jonathan Everett AKA Alien Jon, has been spinning things since childhood, starting with himself, and expanding to socks with tennis balls in them and sticks found in the woods of Maine. Starting with his first pair of devilstix in 1995, he officially entered the world of object manipulation. In 1999, from a foundation built on devilstix and drawing inspiration from T'ai Ji and Aikido, he began spinning glowing objects on strings or in socks at "all night dance parties". After meeting other spinners he learned that objects had been spun in a similar manner for millennia by ancient cultures from around the world. This gave rise to the discovery of fire spinning, and his dedication to the art of contemporary poi began.
<br>
From devilstix and poi other object manipulation quickly followed: Sphereplay, staff, meteor, diabolo, and astrojax to name a few. These talents have been melded with a love of music and dance, including liquid, illusional, and funk styles. Jon loves to play and lives for the spark of innovation and creativity, while further honing his skill through diligent practice.
<br>Jon has performed at the Fringe Benefit for the 1st Annual Boulder Fringe Festival, the 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Ratuva Circus performance and workshops, COSM Fire, the 2007 Burning Man Conclave, and with the ExtraTerrestrial Circus Experiment. He has taught classes around the country in poi, sphereplay, and devilstix at the Double Rainbow Ranch, Boulder Circus Center, 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Shepherd Valley Waldorf School, SphereCamp East and West, Domba/Mystic Jewell dance Studio, Wildfire (CT), Florida State University, and at Renaissance Festivals country-wide. He also teaches private lessons.
<br>
<br>
•	Friday March 27th 7-9PM - Intermediate<br>
•	Sunday March 29th 7-9PM – Advanced<br>

1) Reference Rev's manifesto, and link to sphericulism. Doens't matter if you don't understand it or even if you've ever read it. Just mention it. Always.

2) Say that Alien Jon posted a computer generated version of it on Home of Poi a long time ago. Seriously, he has a lot of stuff buried on there, and nobody will devote that much time to check. Hopefully, he doesn't remember that well either...

3) Say Arashi "theorized" about it back in 2001 or so. Mention "cones" and "3D planar shifts".

4) Use mathamatical equasions and use the word "transformation" and "inverse" as often as possible, but not more than once per sentence each. Sprinkle "inverted" or "hybrid" at will. "Unit circle" can be used in a pinch.

5) Claim your camera is broken, but that you'll "post a video as soon as it's fixed".

Anything I missed? Add your own!

other shapes. it all started when insted of keeping the hands static during atomics you began to switch. when the hand is pointed east the poi is horizontal, when hand pointed south the poi is vertical. creating a spiral like motion in between.

then it insued over to stalls, top north point vertical stall, into above arm 1 beat corkscrew, into 1 beat under arm corkscrew, back into vertical bottomstall, then back up.
there are cone images which may help to understand what i'm getting at.

no i'm not able to do these clean yet, as they may take some time. those with super clean linears horizontal and vertical should be the first to hit these up...... and judging from the last video i could see arashi maybe already being close to making this happen if his research went the way it seems his spinning would take.

needless to say, double staffing these is even fucking weirder but maybe easier.... but more points makes for more confusion, hmmmm

back to the lab for more research.... but first! i must try to beatmatch, then look for a job ;D

Saturday, November 29, 2008

On Saturday, November 29th poi teacher “Alien Jon” will be up from Los Angeles to teach two classes at the CoreStar Dojo. The Dojo is located at 439 W. 2nd in Eugene. The first class is at the beginner level, the second is for intermediate and beyond.
These classes are a rare opportunity to learn from someone who knows poi at the highest level. No one will leave disappointed. For a video of Alien Jon with poi go to: www.youtube.com/watch

BEGINNER LEVEL CLASS from 3pm-4:25pm
If you’re new to poi or haven’t been spinning long, this class is for you. Jon will teach a much better system than the usual “this is the weave!” class that beginners often get. The goal is to give new students a more comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts of poi. The main topics will be ‘Timing and Direction’, ‘Turning and Moving’, ‘Driving Styles’ (isolation, extension, linear,…), and ‘Spaces Around Your Body’.
The class will give you lots of information and practice exercises so you can stay motivated in your practice long after the workshop ends.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL CLASS from 4:30pm-5:55pm
This workshop will open your mind and body to poi as you haven’t experienced it before. Most of the primary topics from the first class will be covered, but in more depth and by teaching crazy moves as examples. For instance, when covering ‘Spaces Around Your Body’, this class will delve into in-swings, inside planes, and introversions. Prepare yourself for lots of information.
We expect the class size for Intermediate to be small, so there will be lots of personal attention. Group interest and skill will dictate the pace of the class. Bring something to write notes on.

PRICING: 1 Workshop - $20 Both Workshops - $30
If these times don’t work for you, contact us about setting up a private lesson to learn even faster. Email djoneverett (at) gmail (dot) com
As good names come up, I will write the names into annotations in youtube. By then I will also add where I learned some of the stuff, because I didn't come up with everything in the video, obviously =)

Cheers!

So, here's yet another tangle post from me....
I've been asked by many folks to teach them different tangle stuff, especially the basic ones (BFL, HL, AW, ect...) and so I've spent alot of time thinking about them and exactly how they work. I have discovered something that breaks it down so simply that I can't believe I never saw it before, it was so basic that I overlooked it.

All a tangle is, is a crosser.

Don't know if anyones really talked about this before or not but it made me realize I could probably teach anyone tangles in minutes if they already know the basic crosser. Heres the theory...

If you spin a same time butterfly and cross your arms at the elbow, as long as you keep your basic butterfly hand position (ie. one low and in front) the poi wont hit each other. So now you are spinning with arms crossed and poi in front of your body, where your elbows cross is technically the nexus of a butterfloop. If you start to uncross from your elbows (still keeping proper hand position) as you slide your arms across each other the poi still miss each other. As you get to your hands the poi start to cross becoming the nexus of the butterfloop.

Same theory applies to AW's, HL's and any tangle for that matter.....Make sense????

beyond Olive's Hybrid math

Ok so I've been working with a more in-depth model for "hybrids" "composite spinning" whatever you want to call it... It's all just relations in configuration space. At any rate its starting to gel to where I can talk about it semi-cohesively, thanks to playing with Cat Eyes as of late. So if you aren't already familiar with Olive's post about possible hybrid combinations here's your homewor:
...doing the math on hybrids:
http://techpoi.tribe.net/thread/78887bd5-89e6-44c7-b744-45d1690feb64#64f5c618-3ff3-4fad-915a-c0d54c0dc644

Weeellll, his math was incomplete (or maybe I just like to over complicate things). So, I'm really starting to get comfortable with spinning a Cat Eye. Cat eye is Arash'ese for a 1beat antispin ellipse:
http://techpoi.tribe.net/thread/552aa17b-7183-40d4-83e3-42514e7b8c5d#1d0aae69-091c-4ad9-b071-f360ee9f6b34
Zan post as well:
http://techpoi.tribe.net/thread/6d17e441-0119-4522-8299-e2f6bac1a188)

As a result, I've been thinking of all those Olive hybrids in terms of one beat and unit circle. The poi unit circle idea is that your poi length = 2units, in other words, poi length is the diameter of the circle an isolation makes. Same thing for the extension that can be substituted in for an iso hybrid style... and same thing for your hands path in a cat eye. I can't yet do a horizontal cat eye, but I think it's possible.
Anyhow, once I started analyzing all those Olive hybrids as unit circle one-beats instead of polyrhythms, The relational poi thing started to become way more clear to me. *deep breath*

So you have to look at the relation of:
a) Lhand vs Lpoi [0,0]
b) Rhand vs Rpoi [0,0]
c) Lpoi vs Rpoi [0,0]
d) Lhand vs Rhand [0,0]
e) Lhand vs Rpoi [0,0]
f) Rhand vs Lpoi [0,0]

Each relation has 2 binary variables:
Orientation (spin)= same[0] or opposite[1]
Phase (timing)= same[0] or opposite[1] (I'm leaving quarter-time and polyrhythmn out for now, more complex model later)

So as far as hand orientation and phase, it's determined by a vector pointing through the hand, away from the pivot for the arm; just like for the poi it is determined by a vector through the head, pointing away from the pivot as it spins. When the vector has cycled through all orientations in the spin plane, that is one beat... or cycle.

Now if you have the same values in a-f, you have a high level of symmetry in poi "configuration space". This gives you 4 different non-hybrid movements:
same-time extensions
same-time isolations
split-time extensions
split-time isolations

The 4 "same poi vs same hand" relationships determine the unit circle "driving styles":
[0,0]=extension
[0,1]=isolation
[1,0]=vertical cat eye
[1,1]=horizontal cat eye

We are all familiar with the 4 poi vs poi and hand vs hand spin but lets write it out anyway:
same direction, same time [0,0]
same direction, split time [0,1]
opposite direction, same time [1,0]
opposite direction, split time [1,1]

In Olives model he applied the 4 to hand/arm motion, but only direction and not timing to poi motion, assuming that they naturally fit in certain ways. In the case of some of the hybrids with more uniform configurations, if you change the poi timing they turn into one of the 4 non-hybrids from above. However, the more complex ones have different configurations based on timing: ie a vertical cat eye as opposed to a horizontal cat eye.

I'm still digesting and grokking the importance of poi vs opposite hand, as something more than an epiphenomena, but it feels like it is another angle that is pertinent.

Ultimately this the beginning of a model to composite movements together that encompasses and goes beyond hybrids. I'd like to try and make it extensible. It should include stalls, compound timings and hence compound circles, linear movements as well as the circular movement, polyrhythmns, etc. This should lay the foundation to describe other driving styles such as spin/antispin, pundula, whips, parallels, etc.

I'm working on animating all this stuff. I have the original Olive list transposed to unit circle 1-beats. I need to render it and compile a video... and of course start to expand it exhaustively to show all of the combinations, with an attribute overlay, so people can start to see the relations at a glance.

Ok 4:20am,
-Alien signing off

i've been trying to break this down technically. Most of it is based on motions of the three beat partner weave

- Same direction partner weave (each of the partners are in same time to themselves, spit time to each other). Focusing on one partner at a time, one of their poi does Under-Over-Back while their other poi does Over-Under- Back. In the wall plane their poi are going the same direction but relative to the partner weave they are doing forwards on one side and backwards on the other.
- Extended 360 rotation with their arms at right angles to their partner.
- A split time stalls sequence where Tint stalls over Shao's arm and then Shao stalls over Tint's arm while the poi on the other side of their bodies continues spinning which brings them to opposite direction.
- Opposite direction partner weave. Now it is Over-Under-Back with one arm while the other arm does Under-Back-Over.
- 180 degree rotation in the weave (with their arms sill around each other). I imagine this is a matter of turning around like we would with any weave. The only extra complication is that there is a partner to avoid but aside from that the motion is probably the same.
- Opposite direction stalls: one poi stalls up while other stalls down, partner does inverse.

Beyond that it is all Tint and Shao's own aesthetics and individual movements where they play with superimposed patterns or move in synchronization.

Nocturnal Sunshine does another variation of this same weave technique Tint and Shao use but instead their arms stay mostly on the sames level (O-U-B with O-U-B rather then staggered) and they linger in certain spots for multiple beats.

Soo, Peter (Mireneye) and I had a Spin at CBY in sweden and came up with some brainmelting stuff. What follows is a brief explanation of one of the concepts we (think we may have) invented. Something I've come to call Triple Composites or Expanded Flowers.

This stuff is weird and still very sketchy, be forewarned ;)

To begin with, I want to explain the basics of the concept. The most basic move is what I call an expanded flower, chances are someones already invented/dabbled with/perfected these, but I haven't seen them done before and they're new to me, so here we go:
In most spinning, we deal with one or two centres of rotation, in all flowers/composites, we have two: 1, poi orbits hand; 2, hand orbits some intangible point in midair, making a circle.
It's very much possible to spin three CoR's with one poi, the first example of which (the first I discovered) goes as follows:
1: Spin your poi around your hand (duh),
2: Make a small circle with your hand (2:1 poi-to-hand cycles, trifoil antispin),
3: Let this circle trace a bigger (longarm) circle (5:1 hand-to-arm cycles, quadfoil spin flower pattern).
So your poi antispins your hand, which spins flowers around a longarm.
This obviously can be done with any imaginable poi:hand or hand:arm relationship, and also you can do any spin/antispin relations that you'd like within this pattern.
The four basic expanded flowers are:
(named by poi:hand relationship -> hand:arm relationship)

Spin -> Spin (3:1/5:1)
Spin -> Antispin (3:1/3:1)
Antispin -> Spin (2:1/5:1)
Antispin -> Antispin (2:1/5:1)

The parentheses after each description denominates the cycle relationships that yield the best results in the beginning. The small spin patterns (poi:hand) work best as two-petal flowers, the small antispins work best as trifoil antispin, all the hand:arm relations work out best when done as four-petal spin or antispin flowers. As I said though, this really only applies when first learning these patterns, eventually there will be tons of other possibilities to explore but to begin with, I'd reccomend learning these basics and then learning to spin them as you'd spin usual flowers, in wheelplanes with the hands doing the same pattern or two separate patterns. There's just so much ground to be covered here, and I'm just getting started...

Expanded flowers are the most basic of the triple composites family, here comes the real madness:

At CBY, Mireneye introduced me to the concept of depth flowers, a concept which I understand Olive invented (?).
Depth flowers are flowers the spend part of or all of their cycles with Centres of Rotation in separate planes. For example, try spinning your poi in a wallplane, splittime opposites, then spin your arms in wheelplane longarm patterns, splittime same direction.
This is something I'd been fiddling with before, but Peter helped me stabilize the concept in my brain and find some uses for it.

Combining the two above concepts of Depth Flowers and Expanded flowers we can get flowerish patterns (not really flowers anymore, rather just really weird composite circles) in which all three of the common planes (wall/wheel/floor) are utilized.

Basic example (direction, timing and cycle relations dont matter much at this point):
1: spin one poi in a wheelplane in front of you,
2: spin your hand in a small horizontal circle,
3: rotate this entire thing in a wallplane longarm circle.

Weeeeird!

I'm just getting started with this and the possibilities here are virtually endless, so I'm not gonne write much more on this now, I'm just throwing it out there to see if anyone's interested in the concept.

Some facts:
Counting out direction, timing, atomics and 45 degree planes, there are 27 different patterns that each hand can spin (CoR's (3) to the power of the amount of usable planes (3)).
Combining your two hands, there are 729 possible combinations of triple composites (Hand possibilities (27, as noted) to the power of amount of hands (2, most often), it should be noted here though that at least some amount of the 729 combinations are utterly useless, I've found some already.
And as I said, this is calculated without respect to direction, timing, and the immense potential for plane bending that exists within these patterns.

And on a final sidenote: It's certainly possible to spin for CoR's, if you spin a very small trifoil antispinin a wheelplane, rotate that one horizontally, and spin the whole thing in a wallplane longarm, you're doing it. This is f'cking weird though...

Sooooo, what do you say? Useless or beautiful?

Peace out,
from Höstdemon.

I'm teaching a class using it at Wildfire and it doesn't feel right to call it the "isolated wallplane lockout flower-like thing". The entire move's done in wallplane with the poi doing an isolated lockout in the middle, hands moving out horizontally to make petals, coming back to the isolation in the middle, moving vertically to make petals, and then repeating (or some variant thereof). All in all the hands make a + sign and the result looks (to me at least) somewhat similar to a 4 petal antispin flower with little flourishes in the center. Sorry I can't seem to find a video example.
I've been playing around with these lately, still not clean all the time, and I'm loving them. I call them Pangles and Stangles, they don't Hyperloop or Airwrap but they do make the same tangle pattern with the chord of the poi so their in a tangle class all their own.

Pangle: If you do a butterfloop except one rotates one pendulums.

Stangle:If you do a loop of some kind(its possible from many directions) around a stalled poi.
dunno, just seems like the same thing...

Okay, I haven't been in many of the "tech" poi discussions or around any spinners for quite awhile so I don't know haw far people have gone with things as far as innovations and such. Recently I've been trying to conquer the cateye anti-spin ellipse stuff and as always working on tangle stuff, don't know what it is but I just can't stop with the tangles. So after being obsessed with isolated hyperloops and anti-spin isolated HL's for some time and trying to figure out how to iso a butterfloop, which I still haven't. Something came to me yesterday while working on cateyes and thinking about how cool anti-spin iso. butterfloops would be......cateye butterfloops!!!!!!

SO!
I think I have a theory that what I am doing actually takes what is your typical "unit circle" and makes it so its a half size smaller. I think the smallest circle you can make with poi is actually half the poi length with these....

So if you are doing a butterfloop and you drive from the cross point of your poi you have to do circles with the poi head, your hands, and the center point at one quarter your "unit circle" diameter so the largest circle is one half your typical "unit circle" which would be with the non anti-spin poi head. Does that make sense? Am I wrong with this? I'm really not sure if that would mean that a true "unit circle" would be half poi length or not, thoughts?

Has this been discussed much? Anyone playing with these at all? I've gotten them many times now but not cleanly yet....

has anyone else done similar stuff? someone out there must've already smoothed this out into something interesting, unless this is new territory?

My thoughts on Plane Bending...

Video demo of things I talk about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYHE7gI6Gpg

I think what I have been calling plane bending has been called 3-D spinning by Alien Jon, I like both terms. Is there a difference between them? I am thinking of spinning where the planes are continuously changing, for the most part using gravity to do so. Correct me if I’m wrong about this, other non-linear planes (I like this word) like atomics do not change planes, ideally they stay fixed relative to each other. So plane bending would not be an accurate adjective because the planes remain still. Is there something else besides 3-D spinning that that term ‘plane bending’ includes?

My specific investigation of plane bending utilizes planes between vertical and horizontal, and spinning with less force than what is required to keep the plane still. As the poi goes up to the highest point gravity will be pulling it down, sliding it into a different plane. Sometimes I think of it as a mini upward stall with an additional horizontal spinning component; in fact, I liken most of my plane bending to partial stalls. For example, at the moment in an upward stall where the poi is still, there is the choice to bring it into any plane, the poi has no momentum therefore it can be directed in any direction. What I do is spin the poi up on a diagonal lightly and at the top the poi does not have too much momentum, which allows me to direct it to a degree, or just let it fall into a new plane. Or to put it a different way: Since the poi is spinning between vertical and horizontal there is both a vertical component and a horizontal component that are for the most part independent. What I am trying to describe and utilize is when the vertical component period (time for complete circle) is shorter than the horizontal component period.

I have not found plane bending where the poi remains vertical throughout the entire shift particularly interesting (i.e. Nick Woolsey). I believe this technique requires shifting the plane in opposite directions every half spin, half to shift planes, half to correct to maintain verticality. I do not do this because planes have inertia (the amount is correlated with the speed of spin); when a plane is set in motion it takes effort to stop it and make it go the other way and my style is one of finding paths of least resistance. The idea is demonstrated by turning around in circles while spinning at a 45 degree angle. The plane maintains it self, relative to me not the audience, as long as my poi does not go the other direction. This is an example of plane bending in the same direction. When I do decide to stop and turn the other way the plane pops back to vertical before tilting the other way and it required more energy to avoid hitting yourself (it doesn’t have to go through vertical, but a certain amount of anti-spin will start happening). This is plane bending the ‘opposite direction’. Compare that with the feeling of keeping the plane vertical and shifting from one wheel plane to the other. This idea of plane bending ‘in the same direction’ is a bit tricky there must be a better way to describe it.

(Demonstration of the previous paragraph is on the accompanying video, number 1)

Another good example of this technique for the type of plane bending I am writing about, is:
(#2 on the video)

1.) Start spinning with your right hand in a plane that is 45 degrees between a vertical and horizontal plane, make sure it is slanted toward you at the top of the spin and away from you at the bottom and that you are spinning counter-clockwise from your point of view.
2.) Put hand directly above head and begin to only apply force directly upwards. As less force is applied, the plane will start to rotate around to the left in a precession.
4.) If this is continued the plane should slide all the way around the head always tilted between horizontal and vertical upwards towards the head.

Beyond that control of the amount of bending is desirable. Try doing four beats and going all the way around the head. One beat at the front, side, back, other side.

Very often while plane bending the planes will be approximately at 90 degrees from each other, like an atom. At this point, the two poi are half way between at least two easily definable timing-directions. Any pattern done with planes at 90 degrees to each other will be some mixture of moves in each of those timing-directions. I’m sure this has been talked about in other threads, it is my favorite part of exploring non-linear planes, finding the connection between the timing-directions.

(The following two paragraphs are #3, on the video))

To illustrate this idea I use the atomic split-time weave. The pattern I am thinking of is very similar to the linear plane version, each hand does two beats on the away side and one on the home side. It’s different in that the ‘away’ side is more in front, 45 degrees towards the wall plane and the home side is 45 degrees behind, and this applies to both hands. Doing this atomic weave there is the option of stopping in the middle, as either hand crosses over the other, into a split-time, crossed-hands, butterfly. The way that both a weave pattern and a butterfly exist in this move illustrates that the atomic weave is half way between a weave and a crossed-hands butterfly and uses principals from both. When both hands are on the same side of the body, the arm the movement acts like that of a weave. When one hand is crossing over to the other side it’s like an opposite direction move, in that there is a moment when the hand comes up and over and must avoid the other poi in a similar manner to a butterfly.

If the planes continue past a 90 degrees orientation towards the opposite direction, the weave pattern can continue however it becomes more awkward the closer to opposite direction the planes come. But the weave pattern is still possible in that opposite direction pattern.
What I find fascinating about this is the conceptual connections that are made between the planes/directions/timings. As I have explored the possibilities between the planes/direction/timing (dimensions), sharp conceptual distinctions between them disappear. It becomes a matter of perspective. Instead of ‘same direction, split time’ opposed to ‘opposite direction, same time’ moves, they all become part of a spectrum. The box is filled in with possibilities and gravity.

To illustrate a different way: There is a conceptual connection between a weave and windmill, in so far as they use similar principals. There is the same type of connection between the weave and butterfly, they also use the same principals and it is difficult to see without exploring what is between them. I enjoy trying to see 3-D tricks from many different plane perspectives. When looked at from different planes perspectives, the same pattern can be both same-direction, split-time and opposite-direction, together-time.
Right now my terminology and understanding exist mostly in 2-D. Coming from that thinking, there are at least three or four perspectives to see most 3-D moves from, the three different planes, and also pendulums (maybe; I don’t quite know how to fit pendulums in yet, I have been thinking of them as another plane (ever tried a pendulum weave?) but I am starting to see them as the normal timings/directions only folded in on themselves). Every thing becomes relative to every thing else, in a smooth continuum, in a multi-dimensional space of possibilities.

My goal has been to be able to stop time, put the poi in random spots around me and give them random direction to start traveling in, then start time and I wouldn’t tangle because no matter what they will be within 45 degrees of a move I know and can define. To me 3-D spinning feels like it fills in the grid of what is defined in 2-D. It connects everything through a path of least resistance and might result in a grand unifying concept of poi, an understanding that will encompass all possible poi movements! ... …

Realistically though, I’ve felt like this several times in the past and whenever I get close to my conceptual goal the ceiling breaks, I have a wonderfully frustrating epiphany and I see a whole new aspect to explore. When that happens I feel like there will never be an end, a complete understanding of poi cannot possibly exist. However, whenever I am close to reaching my current conceptual ceiling I say, “This must be it! After this I will know everything.” This cycle starting to amuse me, but I cannot help it, it is exciting and keeps me motivated and moving forward.

So, onwards! When I started looking at this stuff I was just throwing my poi around and trying not to tangle, spinning at 45 degrees and much as possible. Then I got more specific and tried to find smooth pathways between same direction and opposite direction. This actually got me somewhere. After a while I started to flow without using any concept of planes. I did not know what I was doing, just letting my unconscious learn by trial and error. I really enjoy this method of dynamic intuition (to take a term from Alien Jon). I believe that my unconscious mind is much better at comprehending and utilizing complex systems than my conscious mind (I believe there have been studies that came to this conclusion, i.e Blink by Malcolm Gladwell). Almost right from the start I have always been able to do things that I did not understand. The analytical understanding, which I think is very important, always came later as I watched what I was doing and made generalizations which lead to a filling out of technique that I had not stumbled upon during the trial and error, like trying it in another direction-timing or upside-down. I think this is an important point especially for people learning from teachers. Just because a move can be done does not automatically mean the understanding is there. Not only do the mechanics need to be understood, it also needs to be placed in a relation to every other move, extracting the essence of the move that will allow for variations and for it to be transferred to other timing-directions.

In my personal practice there has never been a time when there been such a spread between what I can do and what I understand. I am only just beginning to understand what is going on with this 3-D spinning and I have been doing it for a year. Trying to teach it at Wild Fire really made me realize how little I consciously grasped what I was doing. All I could do was try to lead people through the same path I took. Since then I have found much shorter paths, while trying to explain it to several people at the Vulcan. I have identified two moves I believe are central, I have been calling them the 3-D weave and the 3-D corkscrew. The name analogy only goes so far. As I explained before each of these tricks are halfway between several moves. For example the 3-D weave is between an atomic weave, a horizontal together-time Thread the Needle (TTN), a together time pendulum TTN, and a side-to-side one point five, among others. I have started work on a tutorial for these moves, I will try to get it out soon.

I don't really know why Isolate weaves alluded me for so god damn long. I think I had a break through of sorts. 5bt Isolated forward weave here I come! However, any tips on how to get into and maintain an isolated windmill? I finally figured that you have to use the same side lead ins [ aka buzzsaw weave ] to maintain a 3bt isolated weave.
