I've been exploring what kind of stuff can be done while spinning around in circles. Like a 360, but over and over again. Anyone else playing with this stuff right now?

peace and love, friends.

Yeah, Yuta does them (pirouettes, shanay turns, barrel turns, whatever). So does Vatra. I'm sure I've seen Rovo do them too.

I've been trying to figure out all the places we can place our hands to go into the 360 turns. So far I've got at the hips from reels, under arm and over shoulder, at chest and shoulder blades, on hips from meltdowns, in crossers, while anti spinning, et cetera.

Ian Smith has been playing with other form of plane bending and three dimensional spinning for a while.

My friend Russ does a lot of anti spin stalls to change planes rapidly. We've also been playing with atomic flower patterns which lend themselves really nicely to rotating three dimensional patterns.

Then there is SriKanta. Who has achieved complete plane control and no longer is limited by the rigidity of them.

Define complete plane control if you may.

all parts or elements of a flat level or surface in check or restraint....

        sounds kinda limiting to me.....

interesting thing here is that planes by definition are 2d.... (so either poi spinners are wrong or the dictionary is wrong, my guess is that both are wrong in someways right in others...)

finished; ended; concluded: a complete orbit of a longitudinal section through the axis of a column to prevent the flourishing or spread of something undesirable

        17. a spiritual agency believed to assist a medium at a séance.
        18. the supervisor to whom an espionage agent reports when in the field.

all in all. i don't think anyone has complete anything control here at this point. as poi as well as language is constantly shifting and evolving through new phases of development. just as life dies and life grows anew, so will poi styles, so will move names, so will what we think is a WHOLE system when we realize we forgot something when a beginner does something we never thought possible and doesn't fit into our dogmatic "complete control of X system"

kinda like quantum researchers telling new age kids "well we haven't found out anything yet, we just haven't been able to disprove it "

thanks for sharing those videos btw.

planes are a system of "this will look like this to the audience in this way" (in my observational state) i know of quite a few talented spinners who never heard of planes nor care to aknowledge them and still look great and have alot of "tech"

a tool is a tool don't let it become the thing in itself.

          heh

It's true that one poi makes a 2d surface, but we are using (most of us) 2 poi. Two 2d images can create a 3d image. Also, the 2d aspect of poi is from the perspective of the hand, not the spinner. as the hand moves, the 2d image created around the moving hand draws a 3d picture in space. Plane control, to me, means more than just being able to stay inside the lines. Plane control is the ability to create, sustain and manipulate a plane. The wheel and wall planes are, to me, didactic techniques designed to develop the muscle memory necessary for plane control.

"Complete plane control" is meaningless to me. I seek to expand my plane control, not complete it. I can't even imagine how to determine if it's complete, but I can always tell when it expands.

Those definitions are awesome! It reminds me that if we look hard enough, we can find meaning in everything.

          Peace.

    Mireneye,
it is a long story and we'll play with it at firedrums.

    Lucas,
like James said, planes are 2d but they still exist within a 3d world and so can be on relative diagonals.
I have no idea what you are talking about in those numbered lists.
I like what you say about models and our way of thinking constantly evolving but I am tired and don't want to fight with you about it right now.
Saying that "planes are a system of this will look like this to the audience in this way" is one way of thinking about planes. What I think you are referring to are the fixed planes of your environment which are usually defined by an audience. There are also relative planes of the moving spinner. We've been talking about this on the fire garden (www.thefiregarden.com/forum/t...-theory) and Home of Poi (www.homeofpoi.com/ubbthread...ost886667)

    James,
we agree for the most part on what it means to have plane control. You are right in disregarding the notion of "complete control." The concept of complete, like perfect, is not a final destination that we will actually someday obtain. The purpose is in the journey to that place.

Right on, friend. I have 2 perspectives that have come together nicely to open up my ability to move more freely.

On the one hand, when I was first learning to spin, plane control is about making the circles stay straight and steady. On this level, the linear level, complete control is achieved (theoretically) by being able to keep my circles facing the same direction while spinning.

On the other hand, once I have control of the circles, plane control can evolve to a nonlinear level. It's no longer about maintaining the circles in a straight line relative to the ground or the audience, but about moving the plane in a controlled manner, which includes being able to spin in a straight line, but is not limited by it. This level has no "complete". It has paths. Infinite paths to explore.

      Peace, friends.

      =)
